Last night EU leaders came to a compromise deal on climate targets for 2030. There are 3 key objectives for 2020, also known as the “20-20-20” targets: A 20 % reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels; Raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources to 20%; A 20 % percent improvement in the EU’s energy efficiency. The Council introduces a binding reduction target of 30% from 2030, unless decided otherwise following a review of this regulation in 2022.

The Commission proposes new targets for the EU fleet wide average CO2 emissions of new passenger cars and vans to help accelerate the transition to low- and zero emission vehicles.

For light-commercial vehicles, a 15% target for 2025 and a 31% target for 2030 were agreed upon. The headline target is to cut EU emissions by “at least” 40 per cent of 1990 levels by 2030.
