Joan of Arc (Jeanne D’Arc, c. 1412-1431 CE) was a medieval peasant who, claiming to receive visions from God, turned the tide of the Hundred Years’ War in favor of a French victory. According to historians, Joan of Arc was 19 when she was burnt at the stake in Rouen by the English on 30 May, 1431. Joan, however, did not stand by her abjuration long: after signing the document, Joan was returned to prison to remain there indefinitely; in prison, Joan said she was visited by her voices, condemning her capitulation. It was at the age of 13 that Joan of Arc said she began hearing mystical voices, which she called her ‘counsels’. Later on she identified these voices with the saints and angels, including Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine.
