A Catalog of Vadose Zone Hydraulic Properties for the Hanford Site E. J. Freeman R. Khaleel(a) P. R. Heller(b) September 2001 Prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC06-76RLO 1830 _____ (a) Fluor Federal Services, Richland, Washington (b) UFA Ventures, Richland, Washington . Vadose zone up to 2 m depth was considered at each site and the entire profile was divided into five layers, viz., 0–0.10, 0.10–0.35, 0.35–0.80, 0.80–1.30 and 1.30–1.70 m. Different physical and hydraulic properties of the soil of the vadose zone were deter-mined at different depths representing these five layers at all the three sites.

Additionally, inorganic, organic, and microbiologically active colloids with diameters between 0.01 and 10 μm can strongly adsorb otherwise immobile chemicals or microbes and thus facilitate their transport by acting as a mobile solid phase. Hydraulic Properties of Stony Vadose Zonesa Hydraulic Properties of Stony Vadose Zonesa Bouwer, Herman; Rice, R. C. 1984-11-01 00:00:00 Hydraulic properties of saturated and unsaturated stony soils were studied on a 3.35 m long column, 1.24 m in diameter, filled with alternating sand and boulder layers.
Vadose Zone Hydrology. 7:39-52. DISCLAIMER This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United … Knowledge of the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties is essential for modeling water flow and solute transport processes in variably saturated subsurface systems.
Understanding the physical and hydraulic properties of the vadose zone is important for modeling land use effects on groundwater quality. Ines, A. V. M., and B. P. Mohanty (2008), Near-Surface Soil Moisture Assimilation for Quantifying Effective Soil Hydraulic Properties Under Different Hydro-Climatic Conditions, Vadose Zone J. A geostatistical inverse technique utilizing both primary and secondary information is developed to estimate conditional means of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity parameters (saturated hydraulic conductivity and pore size distribution parameters) in the vadose zone. water content.
Anisotropic statistical scaling of vadose zone hydraulic property estimates near Maricopa, Arizona A. Guadagnini,1,2 S. P. Neuman,1 M. G. Schaap,3 and M. Riva1,2 Received 17 June 2013; revised 18 November 2013; accepted 22 November 2013; published 17 December 2013.
Understanding the physical and hydraulic properties of the vadose zone is important for modeling land use effects on groundwater quality. Parameters in both functions were optimized by comparing observed and computed cumulative … Knowledge of hydraulic properties of vadose zones is important in pre-dicting movement of water and pollutants to the underlying ground water. The boulders averaged 6.2 × 15 × 20 cm in size and were laid down on their flat side. Hydraulic properties of stony vadose zones are difficult to determine. Magazines. Vadose Zone Hydrology book

Various experimental setups have been developed over the years to measure the hydraulic properties.
This work shows that they can be estimated from K relations measured in the laboratory on samples of the soil between the rocks.

To predict contaminant release to the groundwater, it is necessary to understand the hydraulic properties of the material between the release point and the water table. Vadose zone influences on aquifer parameter estimates of saturated-zone hydraulic theory Jozsef Szilagyi* Conservation and Survey Division, University of Nebraska, 113 Nebraska Hall, Lincoln, NE 68588 USA Received 11 September 2002; revised 25 August 2003; accepted 12 September 2003 Abstract Aquifer drainage was numerically simulated by a coupled, unsaturated-saturated flow … Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention functions of Sample A were determined by means of a multistep outflow experiment. Vadose zone, region of aeration above the water table. This zone also includes the capillary fringe above the water table, the height of which will vary according to the grain size of the sediments. As such, microbial biomass accumulation may reduce the porosity and alter the hydraulic properties of vadose zone soils. In coarse-grained mediums the fringe may be flat at the top and thin, whereas in finer grained material it will tend to be higher and may be very irregular along the upper surface. All samples showed similar saturated hydraulic conductivity values of 1 × 10 −4 cm s −1, with the saturated water flow in all samples obeying Darcy's Law.
This study used a variety of characterization methods to derive conceptual understanding and estimates of hydraulic properties of a coarse alluvial gravel vadose zone in New Zealand.
